5 hours/week, from January 20 to May 20, 2014 (four months), with opportunities for continued involvement.
 
Background:
The Media Co-op is a member-owned, cooperatively-run new network with outlets in Montreal, Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver. Since 2003, we have been covering Canada and Canadian operations abroad from a grassroots perspective, which means centring coverage on the experiences of people who are directly affected, and social movements responding. We have broken numerous stories about the tar sands, Indigenous struggles and the activities of Canadian mining companies abroad.
 
The position:
The Montreal-based assistant editor position is involved with nearly every aspect of the Media Co-op's operations, with an emphasis on writing and editing. Assistant editors work with other Media Co-op staff and volunteers in Montreal and across Canada, and will learn the workings of a dynamic and democratic independent media network. Individuals in this position will gain journalistic writing and editing experience. In weekly meetings in the Montreal office and through training sessions, they will collaborate with experienced grassroots journalists. There will be more than one Assistant Editor; the number will be determined after the application deadline.
 
Tasks include:
• Reporting on grassroots movements and other developments in Montreal
• Editing and writing blog posts
• Collaborating with other editors on research and long-term projects
• Cultivating social media presence
• Maintaining web site
• Organizing events
• Fundraising support
 
Required qualifications and attributes:
• Strong interest in journalism
• Non-academic writing/editing skills
• Working knowledge of social media 
• Research skills
• Commitment to social and environmental justice
• Access to computer and internet
• Residing in Montreal for the duration of the position
 
Optional qualifications and attributes:
• Bi/multi-lingualism (French and other languages)
• Experience in social movements
• Tech savvy
• Knowledge of audio or video editing
• Journalism experience
• Experience with online collaboration tools like Skype and Googledocs
• Blogging experience
