Groups call for permanent solution for international students facing deportation

Twenty migrant justice organizations and South Asian diaspora groups demand that the burden of proof should not be on the students, the victims of the fraud.

Twenty migrant justice organizations and South Asian diaspora groups from across Canada -- Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg -- urge Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Sean Fraser to put a definite stop to the deportation of scores of international students from India.

“These students entered Canada like any other international students and they should not have to bear the burden of proof because of fraud committed by immigration consultants and education recruiters,” the joint letter states.

Navigating the writers' strike as a Canadian

An interview with Tracy Dawson
Writer and actor Tracy Dawson.

The strike initiated on May 2nd by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is, proponents argue, a response to the profound inequality in the movie and TV industries. Hollywood corporations make billions with products beloved around the world, turning actors into stars and enriching executives while many of those whose labour creates the narrative backbone for this success – the writers – face increasing precarity and growing barriers to being able to work in the industry at all.

On April 28, British Columbia’s Solicitor-General and Minister of Public Safety, Mike Farnworth, finally announced his decision on the city’s transition away from the RCMP to the Surrey Police Service (SPS). As has become usual in this affair, Farnworth equivocated, recommending that the transition continue, but adding that the decision was in the end up to the city. Some additional public money was offered if the transition continued that would not be available if the city returned to the RCMP.

At least eight people had their lives taken in Canadian police actions in March 2023. Three people were shot and killed by police (Prince George, BC, Quebec City, Louiseville, Quebec). Two people died in police custody. Two people died in falls with police present while in crisis. One person died in a police action while in crisis. Five of the victims were in mental health crisis at the time of police deployment. Two people died following intoxication arrests. This is a reminder that policing is not about health and wellness and police are not an appropriate response to health needs.
