PREFACE TO PRESS RELEASE:

In keeping with the Algonquin Nation meeting held in Val d'Or on February 14 and 15, 2019, the Algonquin have agreed to work together as a Nation. This press release represents 10 Algonquin Nations from Ontario and Quebec. It is comprised of the following Algonquin First Nation communities, namely: Abitibiwinni, Barriere Lake, Kebaowek, Kitcisakik, Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, Lac Simon, Long Point, Timiskaming, Wahgoshig, and Wolf Lake, symbolizing the removal of the artificial boundaries the Government of Canada put in place to divide the Algonquin Nation. The focus was on the resurgence of one, united Algonquin Nation drawing on the tradition of protecting their land, their water and their people. The Nation discussed the need to assert themselves as owners of the land and not tenants.

ALGONQUIN NATION REACHES AGREEMENT WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

Kitigan Zibi - July 4, 2019 - The Algonquin Nation and the Government of Canada reached an agreement regarding the Indigenous Peoples Space, following a 13 day demonstration and a hunger strike by Grand Chief Verna Polson.

The two parties agreed that 100 Wellington would not open without a resolution that successfully addresses the interests of the Algonquin People. Furthermore the “infill” section within the Indigenous Peoples Space will be a dedicated space for the Algonquin. The Algonquin Nation and the Government of Canada will begin a bilateral process to develop this space, and the Government is prepared to have a building constructed should this be part of the request put forward by the Algonquin.

The Algonquin Nation sincerely thanks everyone who supported us We greatly appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by, remain on the site with us, dropped off food and medicine and who spoke out, verbally or in writing in support of us.  Kichi Migwech
