WATCH: Hidden Stories of Canada's Immigration Detention

Today, the provisions of Bill C-31 came into effect. Officially known as theĀ Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act, it has also been dubbed the "Refugee Exclusion Act" by refugee and migrant rights supportes due to the harsh restrictions it places on people applying for refuge in Canada.

Across the country, actions have been held in the last two weeks to highlight the severity of these changes, and the impacts it will have not just on refugees being able to come to Canada, but on access to necessary medical services and the spectre of long-term incarceration for claimants.

It also focuses in on the cases of Mohammad Mahjoub and Mahmoud Jaballah, who have been fighting security certificates - one of the most onerous tools used by the government against migrants they suspect to be a national sercurity threats. These certificates allow for the withholding of evidence from defense attorneys and for trials to be held in secret. Over the past decade, various court rulings have gone against security certificates, and significant questions have been raised about the origins of evidence being used in these trials.
