An Open Letter to the Liberal Party of Canada Re: Bill C-311

This Wednesday, April 14, 2010, Canadians will watch as elected
officials decide whether or not to take meaningful federal action on climate change. Given the magnitude of consequences our civilization will face if runaway climate change isn’t stopped, MPs from all parties should be present to cast their vote supporting Bill C-311, the Climate Change Accountability Act.

Bill C-311 is a commitment to deep and binding targets to reduce Canada’s global warming pollution – 25% by 2020, and 80% by 2050, based on 1990 levels –the first and only sign of federal climate legislation we’ve seen since Canada ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

On April 14th, we request that Liberal MPs act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and encourage other leaders to do the same.  The Liberal Party who was once supportive of Bill C-311 has turned climate change into a partisan issue, and withdrawn their support since Michael Ignatieff became the Opposition leader.  They have moved from the Green Shift, to sticking their heads deep into the Tar Sands, and made the entire Liberal party complicit in Canada's international climate shame.

Young Canadians have been waiting a long time to see the government take tangible action. Our generation will inherit the responsibility to care for the land, water, air, and climate that are all under threat due to human activity can and should be regulated by the Canadian government.  As one of the world’s worst polluters, Canada has a responsibility to safeguard our future, and the future of young people around the world.  But we are not being listened to. Our concerns continue to fall on deaf ears.

How are young Canadians expected to have any faith in the Canadian government when we have yet to see the political will and climate leadership this country needs? We call on the Liberal party to express the will to turn the tide and make the right decision for residents of Canada that they represent in Parliament.  We call on the Liberal Party to vote in support of Bill C-311 on April 14th.
