Simcoe County to vote on Dump Site 41

Simcoe County Council meets Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. One of the resolutions on the agenda is to discontinue construction and future development of Dump Site 41. The SDS41 group welcomes this resolution, but also urges that Simcoe County request the revocation of the Certificate of Approval to prevent a future sale of the property and the certificate to a private landfill corporation.

Last month, after a four-month protest at the gate of Dump Site 41, and rallies that attracted as many as 2,000 people, Simcoe County Council voted 22-10 to impose a one-year moratorium on construction. It was a significant victory for a coalition of First Nations people, farmers, cottagers and environmentalists who mobilized public opinion across Simcoe County and beyond.

This battle isn't just about garbage, although protestors are determined to work for Zero Waste and ensure that dumps are no longer acceptable anywhere.  It is also about water. For reasons that still have to be studied, a combination of natural filtration features makes the source water in the Site 41 area exceptionally pure - comparable to 6,000-year-old Arctic ice cores. It has been adopted internationally as a reference in studies of the effect of human activities on groundwater.
