Dominion Media Coop AGM

The Dominion Newspaper is now incorporated as Canada’s first multi-stakeholder media cooperative. In February, we will be having our first meeting of editor, contributor and reader members of the coop. Please join us as we review the challenges and successes of the past year, discuss the future direction and initiatives of the coop (including our first Local in Halifax!) and nominate our first board of directors made up of editor, contributor and reader members.

"Why We Fight"

Acclaimed filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, creates a sense of urgency and moves beyond the headlines to uncover the deeper answers behind the American war machine in WHY WE FIGHT - Winner of the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. Inspired by Dwight Eisenhower's legendary farewell speech, filmmaker Jarecki surveys the scorched landscape of a half-century's military adventures, asking how, and revealing why he believes that the nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war.

December 22, Atlantica Trial, recap

Many thanks to all those who came to support! A further thanks to all those who helped with the benefit show on Dec 19th! Court solidarity is so important to keep morale high amongst those who the State tries to use as examples to scare away further dissent.

There were about 35 people in attendance for support through the day. It was amazing and very uplifting for the defendants to have the supporters in the room. It helped give us a boost of energy as we took the stand, always a difficult experience.

Media Analysis of Gaza Protests

In the past few days, there have been several large demonstrations against Israel's bombing and subsequent invasion of Gaza. In many cases, the corporate media has underreported the numbers and the character of these demonstrations.

In any case, we need to gather accurate information about the demonstrations across the country that have taken place.

You can help, by posting comments below, with:

  • Links to estimates of turnout at demonstrations
  • Photos showing the size of the crowds
  • Links to corporate media coverage that misrepresents these numbers

With the winter season now upon us, some are left to sleep in the cold after the province cut funding to a homeless shelter in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Pendleton Place, a harm-reduction shelter operating during the winter months, will not be re-opening. As a result, numerous community organizations are fighting to have the decision reversed.

Gaza protests?

hey folks,
I'm not in Halifax at the moment (I won't be back until the 6th) but I'm wondering if there have been any protests about the Israel attacks on Gaza and if so, if there are any pics etc that could be posted to the site.
cheers,
Hillary

What kind of coverage do you want to see?

We're starting a Media Co-op because existing media coverage is often flawed, incomplete, or motivated by the wrong things.

If you're here, we're guessing it's for similar reasons.

So tell us, what kind of coverage do you want to see from the Halifax Media Co-op? Is there a particular place you'd like to hear more about? An ongoing issue that you'd like to be truly informed on? An initiative that should reach a bigger audience?

Post your thoughts below.

Events to cover in January

Post your ideas below. If you're interested in covering an event (i.e. taking photos, interviewing organizers or participants, or showing up and writing about what you see), reply to the comment that mentions the event you want to cover.

Whether the Poor Burn or Freeze, There is No Excuse for Soft-Ball Questions

It is telling that the violent death of Tracey, a homeless woman in Vancouver, who burned to death after attempting to keep warm after constructing a small fire in a downtown street corner, has resulted in national headlines while the freezing death of another unidentified homeless man in Montreal the very next night has resulted in only a passing mention in Montreal newspapers.
