TORONTO – Dozens of Toronto tenants facing eviction hearings at Ontario's Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) will have their cases heard jointly. Their lawyers successfully argued this will be the most judicially efficient way to proceed because they all have "the same common issues and the same defense."

Op/ed: The free market will not fix our housing crisis

Only sustained public sector investment in non-profit housing can create the affordability we need

Canada’s distorted debate about housing risks costing the public far more than most of us realize.

Nearly all attention is placed on the supposed lack of supply, which has enabled right-wing politicians and pundits to falsely blame the crisis on excessive “red tape,” foreign students, new Canadians, or some combination thereof.

Migrants — from undocumented people, to refugees, to foreign students — have been made scapegoats in Canada, with panics over migration ramping up along a variety of fronts, including housing, employment, and education. Over the last few weeks there has been a moral panic around foreign students, blaming them rather than housing profiteers for the country's lack of affordable housing and of shelters for unhoused people.

While the tenants of 33 King St. and 22 John St., in Toronto, say it's disappointing and "shameful" that their landlord declined the mayor’s invitation to sit at the negotiating table, they remain undeterred in their ongoing rent strike against their landlord's rent increases.

"We are disappointed that Dream has refused even the mayor's invitation to come and meet with tenants as a collective," Chiara Padovani, an organizer with the York-South Weston Tenant Union (YSW), told reporters outside a town hall Wednesday night, Sept. 13, at Toronto’s Weston King Neighbourhood Centre.

Tenants who fight together, win together.

That's what tenants from 1570 Lawrence Ave. West in Toronto want other tenants around the city to know, after the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) recently dismissed their landlord's application to evict them in order to complete renovations.
