On Tuesday, June 19, First Nations from the north shore of Lake Huron organized a demonstration against cuts and against auterity in Sudbury, Ontario. The action had a particular focus on the cuts to OntarioWorks (the government's name for welfare in Ontario) and the Ontario Disability Support Program in the latest provincial budget. More than 150 people participated. While no media co-op writers were present to produce a full written report, photographer Caelie Frampton -- currently of Vancouver, but originally from Sudbury -- happened to be in town and she took the photographs displayed here (except the event poster, which was produced by the event organizers).

The organizers' description of the event on FaceBook read:

Stop the cuts to our most vulnerable: Community Gathering and Rally. June 19, 12 noon, Sudbury Arena. Organized by Niigaaniin. "It is important to support the rally as the cuts proposed to Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program will have a serious impact on our citizens and place more pressure on existing programs and services that will have to cover off the shortfalls in Ontario Works and ODSP recipients."
